Bicyclist/Motorist Safety Tips

Creating safe opportunities for walking and bicycling is critical to improving the safety of all pedestrians and bicyclists. We can’t do this alone. It’s up to all of us, both motorist and bicyclist, to work together and SHARE THE ROAD

Pedestrian Safety Tips

  • Choose the safest route
  • Select a route that is most direct and has intersections with crosswalks when possible
  • Stay on the sidewalk and be aware of traffic in the area
  • If there is no sidewalk, walk and stand facing oncoming traffic
  • Do not wear headphones or text while walking, as you may not hear the sounds of oncoming traffic
  • Cross the street safely:
    • Stop at the curb or edge of the street
    • Look left, right, left and behind you and in front of you for traffic
    • Listen for emergency vehicles and vehicles coming around the corner  that you cannot see
    • Make eye contact with drivers to make sure they see and stop for you
    • Wait until no traffic is coming and then begin to cross
    • Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing
    • Walk, do not run across the street
  • Obey traffic signs and signals
  • Cross roads in crosswalks instead of making mid-block crossings
  • Be aware of drivers in parked cars that may be ready to move
  • Look for cars that may be entering or exiting driveways or alleyways
  • Do not enter the street from between parked cars or from behind bushes or shrubbery
  • Wear bright colors so that motorists can easily see you
  • Wear reflective clothing in dark or low light conditions to increase visibility
  • Never accept a ride from strangers
  • Develop a buddy system and walk in groups
  • Do not take shortcuts or cut through alleys, private property, or across vacant lots
  • Immediately report anyone suspicious
