About the Commission

The Commission consists of nine members appointed by the mayor with the approval of the City Council. Members are appointed for four-year terms and serve without compensation.

Seven members are appointed to represent seniors and be not less than 55 years of age at the time of appointment. Two members are appointed to represent veterans and must meet one of the following criteria:
  1. Be an honorable discharged veteran of the U.S. armed forces
  2. Be an active duty armed forces member serving in a civilian capacity
  3. Be a member of a Veterans Service Organization based within city limits which is federally chartered and/or recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs for claim representation

All nine members shall be residents of the City of La Mesa.

Commission Responsibilities

The Commission:
  • Serves as an advisory body to the City Council on policy matters pertaining to programs, projects, and issues that address the concerns and needs of seniors adults and veterans in the community.
  • Plans and coordinates community education and information forums on senior and veteran topics and issues.
  • Provides support to projects and activities for the elderly; and advises on the development of senior programs and initiatives.
  • Explore issues and develop activities which will promote positive senior adult and veteran relations in the city.
